The Woodlands, TX - On Saturday 1st October, Texas A&M traveled to Montgomery College to play Sam Houston State, Baylor, and Texas State in a tournament held by The Woodlands RFC. The halves were shortened to 25 minutes to accommodate all the games.

The Aggies started off with a hard fought victory over Sam Houston State’s 1st XV. The margin of victory could have been much larger except for some handling errors at crucial moments of the match. Final Score; Texas A&M 13 – 3 Sam Houston State.

The next match saw the Aggies match up once again with Sam, but this time it was the 2nd XV who pulled off a marvelous win. With at least 7 players making their rugby debuts, the pack was dominant and the backs flowing, to wind up winning convincingly [Score to be updated].

With the 1sts rested for a couple of hours, they took the field to play Baylor. The rest seemed to work wonders. In a fantastic display of attacking rugby, the Aggies ran away with a 63-0 win.

The final encounter was with Texas State. In a very scrappy and heated battle, the Aggies, to much appreciation from the coaching staff, kept their heads on and overcame the size and heightened aggression of the Texas State team. After going behind early on, they came back to win [Score to be updated].

The day was a great success for Texas A&M who aim to put away the misery of crashing out of the Western Playoffs last year. Several players and moments stood out. Particularly Sam Rooke’s barreling runs, the ferocity of debutant Sterling Bradford at lock, debutant twins Alex and Nick Darnley in the back row, and one of the vicious tackles I have ever seen from rookie winger Joseph Barnes, to which he was rewarded after the tournament by The Woodlands players.

Although still early on in the season, there were many positives to take back to College Station. The Aggies prepare for the Cowtown Tournament in Fort Worth this weekend where they will hopefully achieve the same result.
