The Woodlands , TX - The Woodlands RFC awarded the 4th Annual Cherrybone Scholarship during the Cherrybone Collegiate Invitational Tournament this past weekend held in the Woodlands. The scholarship and the tournament are named in the memory of long time rugby supporters John Cherrybone and his son David. Both would be very glad to know that their legacy includes a scholarship to a young deserving rugby player.

This year’s $1000 award recipient is Texas A&M freshmen open side flanker Kellen Burke. Kellen comes to us via St. Thomas High School where he played rugby for 3 years and served as captain as a senior. Kellen has also been selected to the TRU u19 team and to the USA Eagles u18 program. “Texas A&M could not be happier to have Kellen Burke as a part of our program. He is a tireless worker and a top flight rugby recruit that should have an immediate effect on our club.” said forwards coach Johnny Smith. “I would personally like to thank the Cherrybone family and the Woodlands RFC for this very generous scholarship. I will work very hard to earn this very special privilege” stated Kellen.

As icing on the cake, Texas A&M’s Maroon and White squads made it to the finals of the tournament and shared the championship after a very fierce day of rugby against Texas State, Baylor, Rice and Sam Houston. Director of Rugby Dave Jenkins was convinced things went well, “This was by far the most successful tournament to date. The weather was great, the teams played hard and I believe everyone got good rugby. The Cherrybone Scholarship is near and dear to the Woodlands RFC and we are very happy with Kellen as its recipient.” Anyone interested in donating to this scholarship or joining the Woodlands RFC can go to www.woodlandsrugby.com.
