| College Station , TX - Texas A&M Rugby held its annual Maroon vs. White match to kick off the season this past weekend. The match is set up for people of all playing levels to come out and show their stuff for Texas A&M’s program. With one of the biggest ever turn outs in terms of players, it promised to be a great event. At the midweek training sessions, the Aggies have been working with well over fifty players, not including the twenty or so senior squad players. Those players are in a fitness intensive training squad for the first few weeks of the semester. | |
The game, as to be expected, was a very closely fought one. Several players from the freshman Class of 2011 stood out. It was very encouraging to see the high level of rugby that was being played from players who were playing for their high schools only a few short months ago. The coaches agreed that the match produced the best rugby that they had ever seen from a Maroon vs. White game. In the end, the Maroon side won by the narrowest of margins. Aggie Rugby also welcomed several prospective players from high schools looking to come to Texas A&M. For some time the Maroon vs. White weekend has been chosen for the recruits to come and get a taste of what the program has to offer. The students were invited to Midnight Yell on Friday night to experience some of the classic Aggieland spirit. After watching the rugby match on Saturday morning, they were treated to an Aggie football game where Texas A&M ran out 47 - 45 winners over Fresno State after triple overtime. Texas A&M Rugby would like to thank the prospective players and their families for visiting. It is our hope that their experience was both informative and a pleasurable one. The club would also like to thank the referees for some very professional and helpful officiating. |
